Sony President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida stated that the company is planning the launch of PlayStation for the next generation.
"At this point, what I can say is it's necessary to have the next generation of hardware," Yoshida told the Financial Times. He refused to officially name the future console "PlayStation 5."
Yoshida's comments were in response to the debate over how Sony should address the rising global smartphone gaming market and the changing habits of consumers as they read game studios and the global market for the successor to the PlayStation 4.
The Financial Times broadcast a rumor within the industry that Sony may also be planning a tablet that will connect to multiple devices "as online game streaming becomes more widespread and the company seeks to gain greater synergies between its gaming and film divisions."
The publication also cites "people in the game publishing industry with knowledge of Sony's plans for future consoles" as saying early indications are that the next-generation PlayStation may have a basic architecture similar to the PlayStation 4 and don't represent a major departure from the console.
Back in April 2018 it was stated by several game development sources that the PlayStation 5 would not be released until 2020 at the earliest.
"Although there will be a next-gen console, is this what today's gamers are looking for? Better hardware and visual improvements, but what about today's gaming trends?"

A bit of perspective, consoles and lifestyle have little to do with today's trends. A good alternative for the consumer market of the PlayStation is to increase mobility (as the Nintendo Switch did), while preserving the graphics and power (from the PS4Pro at a minimum). Then, there are more IPs that are still in the playstation like the era of PS1 - PS2. We'll just have to wait and see what the PS5 will look like.
