7 Facts for you to know before watching Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Introduction

I wrote this article with the aim of sharing a breakdown that I got or learned after watching the Official Trailer of the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse movie. After finding small details, or references behind the making of this film, I became even more amazed, because this is the film I was really looking forward to this year. Please read carefully because the author wants you to broaden your horizons, whether for Marvel movie fans, superhero movies, Spider-Man fans, or those of you who are film experts/watchers.

Previously, please watch the trailer for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

Here are 7 things you should know before watching Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse:

1. "Spider-Man" from various Universes

In the film Spider-Man into the Spider Verse, the audience will be presented with not only one Spider-Man, but SIX (6) Spider-Man. And, maybe there will be a surprise that can increase the number of Spider-Man in this film (who knows). After watching repeatedly and doing research, I as a writer will introduce all the "main" characters who will appear as Spider-Man.

Peter Parker

Peter Benjamin Parker was born in Queens to Richard and Mary Parker. While Peter was a baby, his parents were assigned by the CIA to infiltrate an Algerian-based spy controlled by the communist agent, Red Skull (yes, the villain in Captain America The First Avenger). When the Red Skull learns that Richard and Mary are double agents, he kills them by one of his agents, the Finisher, in a plane crash overseas and then frames them for treason.

Peter Parker as Spider-Man is familiar to us, because this character is the most familiar image/role in playing the superhero Spider-Man. It comes from the Earth-616 universe. In this film, Peter looks more dull, mature (even already looks like a father), and unorganized which may be the character development for this film.

Gwen Stacy / Spider-Gwen

In this film, Gwen is made several years younger than the original story, and she is designed to resemble the character in the Ultimate Spider-Man Animated series. Gwen is from the Earth-65 universe. Spider-Gwen wears a black bodysuit with white areas forming a spider design, a white hood with a pink-magenta interior lining. In this film, Gwen looks very beautiful, cool, athletic, and loves music, wrapped with her beautiful eyes.

Miles Morales

Miles Morales, a young boy from Brooklyn visits his uncle Aaron Davis (against his parents' wishes, due to his uncle's criminal past). At his uncle's apartment, Miles is bitten by an Oz-enhanced spider, which appears from Aaron's bag, and Miles discovers that he has received super-human abilities; such as camouflage, increased agility, and a kind of stun explosion. After revealing his newfound invention, he has powers similar to Spider-Man's, including crawling on walls. But Miles reacts negatively, as he just wants to be normal, and decides to leave the heroism role to the real Spider-Man.

Miles is one of the central and main characters in the film Spider-Man into the Spider Verse. It comes from the Earth-1610 universe. In this film, Miles looks clumsy, hesitant, but tough, maybe because he is in his teens and he is not used to his abilities as a Spider-Man, which will make this film interesting and curious to look forward to.

Peter Parker / Spider-Man Noir

This is a dark-futuristic version of Spider-Man with Peter Parker as the figure behind this costume. It comes from the Earth-90214 universe. Even the figure in this film, he is made identical with a dark costume, resembling the original concept in the comic, with a touch of a fedora hat.

Peni Parker

The original story in the comic is that Peni is the foster child of Ben and May Parker, after Peni's parents died in an accident while developing the SP//dr suit robot (which Peni would later use as Spider-Man). It comes from the Earth-14512 universe. Peni's character in this film is very girly and teenage, with a cute and funny feel, but when she uses her robot she becomes tough.

Peter Porker / Spider-Ham

In this case, Peter Porker is a spider who is bitten by a pig who is a scientist. Instantly, the spider turned into Peter Porker. His form turns into a pig, but Peter Porker still has spider abilities such as crawling / sticking to walls or removing cobwebs. It comes from the Earth-8311 universe. His character in this film is very similar to the concept in the comics, by showing more cartoon elements in this film.

2. Peter Parker of the Sam Raimi era

Yes, you may still be wondering. And I can confirm that, Peter Parker in this film is a presentation of the Spider-Man film trilogy in the Tobey McGuire era. The real thing to confirm this, is that in the trailer, it shows scenes that actually happened in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film, such as the scene of Peter Parker stopping a train that went out of control, or the legendary kiss scene between Peter and Mary Jane. Unfortunately, the voice of Peter Parker in this film is not Tobey McGuire, but a person named Jake Johnson.

3. The main character Miles Morales

Yes, you may have noticed it. The story development will be surrounded by Miles Morales as the "new" Spider-Man, and seeing from Miles' point of view, also feeling about how Miles started his journey as Spider-Man. Fun Fact, the background of the city atmosphere will be more like the city of Brooklyn, New York, if previously Peter Parker lived in urban Queens.

Miles himself is the son of a police officer, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, aged 13 to an African American father and a Puerto Rican mother. His character is shown that Miles as a smart bookworm with scientific talent similar to his predecessor, Peter Parker. The character debuted in the fourth issue of the mini-series Ultimate Fallout, which was released on August 3, 2011. He then starred in the September 2011 launch of the Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man series. Miles Morales was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli.

4. Big Villain and other enemies

From the trailer that was shown some time ago, it was shown that Wilson Fisk a.k.a Kingpin will be the main villain in this film. He is a big criminal as well as a villain behind the scenes in the Spider-Man universe, and this time he is the main antagonist in this Spider Verse film. He will be voiced by the famous actor Liev Schreiber (if you remember the Wolverine film, he played the character of Sabretooth). Kingpin is from the Earth-616 universe.

Other antagonists in the Spider-Man universe seen in the trailer include Scorpio, and Tombstone. Also, at the end of the trailer, it also features the Green Goblin as a surprise.

5. Peter Parker as "Teacher"

Yes, Peter will meet Miles in the same universe. Then, coincidentally Miles, who had just been "bitten", met Peter in the form of Spider-Man. Then, Miles will ask if Peter would like to teach Miles as Spider-Man. The trailer also shows Miles being taught to swing with a net by the teacher.

6. Blend of visual art styles

Some of you may not be aware, but there are some combinations of visual styles here. First, the general visual style is comic art style. Apart from that, when we see Peni Parker with other characters, he looks like an anime / manga character or you could say his visual style is quite different. Plus, if you look at the Spider-Ham character in the trailer, it's clear that this cute pig character is a blend of visual styles from the 90s cartoon (Looney Tunes). However, all of them are combined with the same visual style (comic art style) so that all elements of the character / background are still pleasing to the eye.

7. Comic Art Style

This one point is so amazing to me. At least, for those of you who understand the world of film / animation, a visual approach like this is so good because there are many techniques that are used. Some points of evidence that I can give are;

The polka dot effect seen in many scenes in the trailer

There are thin shading lines as "shadows" on every texture in the film, whether on characters or objects

Effect "BOOM !" namely the addition of text pop-ups like in a comic sense, when there is a scene (explosion, or when it swings).

The film is scheduled to premiere on December 14, 2018.
